The UK government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is one of the most generous home improvement grants currently available — and unlike many schemes, it is not means-tested and does not need to be repaid. If you have a fossil fuel heating system and own your home, there is a strong chance you qualify for up to £7,500 toward a heat pump installation.

💰 Current BUS Grant Amounts (2025–2027)

£7,500
Air Source Heat Pump (standard properties)
£7,500
Ground Source Heat Pump (standard properties)
£9,000
Air or Ground Source Heat Pump — off-gas grid (oil/LPG) properties from 21 July 2026
£2,500
Air-to-Air Heat Pump (residential properties)

What Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is administered by Ofgem on behalf of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). It was launched in May 2022 as part of the government's Warm Homes Plan and is confirmed to run until December 2027.

The scheme provides upfront capital grants to help property owners replace existing fossil fuel or electric heating systems with low-carbon alternatives. The grant is deducted directly from your installation invoice — you pay only the remaining balance. It is not a loan, it is not repayable, and it is not means-tested.

Am I Eligible?

To qualify for the BUS you must meet the following criteria:

✅ No Income Limit

Unlike some energy schemes, the BUS is not means-tested. It is available to all eligible property owners regardless of income or savings. The grant is available on a first-come, first-served basis from the annual budget, so applying sooner is always advisable.

How Does the Application Process Work?

The BUS is installer-led — meaning your MCS-certified installer (that's us) handles the application on your behalf. Here's how it works step by step:

  1. Contact us for a free assessment — we visit your property, confirm eligibility and design the right heat pump system for your home.
  2. We apply to Ofgem for a BUS voucher before installation begins. Vouchers are typically issued within 5 working days.
  3. We install your heat pump to MCS standards. Installation typically takes 2–5 days depending on the system type.
  4. The £7,500 grant is deducted from your invoice. You pay only the net amount. No claiming, no waiting for a rebate.
  5. We register your MCS certificate — which you will need for your home insurer and if you later add solar panels to access the Smart Export Guarantee.

Can I Combine a Heat Pump With Solar Panels?

Yes — and it is highly recommended. A heat pump powered by electricity from solar panels is one of the most cost-effective clean heating solutions available. Solar panels generate free electricity during daylight hours that your heat pump can use directly, dramatically reducing your running costs.

Households that combine a BUS-funded heat pump with a solar panel system can achieve annual heating running costs significantly lower than an equivalent gas boiler — making the combination a compelling long-term investment.

How Much Will I Still Pay After the Grant?

The total installed cost of an air source heat pump varies depending on property size, existing radiator suitability and any additional works required. After the £7,500 BUS grant, a typical air source heat pump installation costs between £3,000 and £8,000 for most properties. Ground source heat pumps are more expensive to install but offer higher efficiency and lower running costs.

⏳ Act Before the Budget Runs Out

The BUS budget for 2025/26 is £295 million — the largest annual allocation since the scheme launched. However, demand has increased significantly with over 100,000 applications made since 2022. Vouchers are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. We strongly recommend contacting us now to begin your assessment and secure your place in the queue.
